Run a free company check on any live UK company by name or company number. See whether it's active, when it was set up, and when its next filings are due.

What each company page shows

• Registered name and number, exactly as they appear on the public register.
• Status: active, or flagged, for example with a proposal to strike off.
• Incorporation date: how long the company has existed.
• Next deadlines for the confirmation statement and annual accounts, with how many days are left or how late they are.
• A link to the full Companies House record for directors, filing history and documents.

Searching by name

Type the start of the name. We match it the way Companies House compares names, so "acme", "The Acme" and "ACME LTD" all find the same companies. Results are listed alphabetically; add words to narrow them down.

Searching by number

Enter the company number with or without leading zeros or spaces. "6303010" and "06303010" both work. Numbers with a letter prefix, such as "SC123456", go straight to that company. When a number is entered, we check Companies House live where possible, so the deadlines reflect the latest filings.

The official Companies House search

Companies House runs its own free service, Find and update company information, where you can search by company name, company number or officer name.^source Searching it costs nothing.^source It adds detail our search doesn't show:

• Registered address, officers (current and resigned), filed document images, charges, previous names and insolvency information.^source
• A search for disqualified directors.^source
• Advanced, alphabetical and dissolved company searches.^source
• Free email alerts when a company updates its details.^source

One thing to bear in mind with any search: Companies House doesn't check the accuracy of the information companies file.^source Every company page here links straight to its official record.

Why look up a company?

• Before you trade with it: confirm it exists, is active and isn't being struck off.
• Before you choose a name: see which companies already use similar names. For a yes-or-no answer, use the name checker.
• Before you pay an invoice: check the supplier's VAT number is valid with the VAT number checker.
